Celebrating the timeless artistry of German wooden toys in Karuizawa, Japan.
Founded in 1998, the Karuizawa Erz Toy Museum is a sister institution to the Toy Museum in Seiffen, Germany, located in the heart of the Erzgebirge region. Our museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing over 300 years of German wooden toy craftsmanship, a tradition that resonates deeply with Japan’s own heritage of folk art.
Our mission is to share the joy and cultural significance of these handcrafted toys, from nutcrackers to Christmas pyramids, with visitors of all ages. We aim to foster an appreciation for the artistry and history behind each piece, connecting cultures through creativity.
The museum hosts seasonal exhibitions in spring/summer and autumn/winter, featuring rare and traditional pieces that highlight the ingenuity of Erzgebirge artisans. We invite you to explore this unique blend of German and Japanese cultural heritage.
